The Forest Gallery collection is an ongoing investigation into the conflict between landscape art and the environmental cost of the work itself, and the place that nature occupies within our modern culture. Oil painting has an impact (materials, solvents, shipping, etc.) that is difficult to ignore. Our society both reveres art depicting our natural spaces and continues to close its eyes to the relentless growth of our capitalist system that exploits and destroys nature. Humans no longer seem to recognise that they are in fact animals with an ecological niche that they have been ignoring to their own peril. I put my paintings back into the disappearing forest that inspired them in order to invite the viewer to share in this troubling clash of ideas.
